Revolutionizing the supply of resources in Sahelian cities through urban agroforestry models
Africa is urbanizing faster than any continent to date. Cities are expanding rapidly without planning and require more and more resources to meet the needs of their inhabitants while facing a hostile and erratic climate. Faced with this challenge, it is necessary to promote a balanced city model, supporting local agriculture and enhancing natural capital for the benefit of its population. This project, therefore, aims to develop urban agroforestry by offering a wide range of services to meet the needs of inhabitants in the arid and semi-arid areas of the Great Green Wall.

OUR APPROACH
This project will bring together a coalition of actors (local authorities, urban specialists, government technical services, companies, etc.) to combine technical, scientific and economic expertise to design urban agroforestry models in three cities with different needs:
- Ziniaré in Burkina Faso
- Tambacounda in Senegal
- Zinder in Niger
These models will produce and offer a wide range of health, food and environmental services for local inhabitants. Within the framework of this project, 9 agroforestry pilot sites will be developed in secure locations (schools, hospitals) to test urban agroforestry systems and methods. Our intention with these pilot sites is also to train and educate students in agroforestry approaches which will, in turn, create 120 jobs. Ultimately, the project will result in agroforestry models that can be easily replicated in other African cities.
